Myth or Fact: Flat Feet Always Cause Problems

If you’ve ever been told you have flat feet, you may wonder whether it’s something to worry about. The truth is that not everyone with flat feet experiences pain or develops foot problems.

At New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group, we help patients understand the difference between flat feet that are simply part of their anatomy and those that may require treatment.

So, is the statement “flat feet always cause problems” a myth or a fact?

It’s a myth.

Why Some People Never Have Symptoms

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, occur when the arches of the feet are low or absent while standing. Some people are born with flat feet and never experience discomfort. They can walk, exercise, and stay active without limitations.

When Flat Feet Can Become a Problem

Although flat feet aren’t always painful, they can sometimes change how weight is distributed through your feet and legs, placing extra stress on muscles, tendons, and joints.

You may benefit from an evaluation if you experience:

  • Pain in the arch, heel, or ankle
  • Swelling along the inside of the foot
  • Foot fatigue after standing or walking
  • Difficulty exercising
  • Shoes that wear unevenly
  • Pain that extends into the knees, hips, or lower back

Flat feet can also develop later in life due to injuryarthritis, or weakening of the posterior tibial tendon, which helps support the arch.

Treatment Depends on Your Symptoms

Having flat feet doesn’t automatically mean you need treatment. Your podiatrist will evaluate your symptoms, activity level, foot mechanics, and overall health before recommending the most appropriate treatment.

Options may include:

  • Supportive footwear
  • Custom orthotics
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Activity modifications
  • Physical therapy
  • Advanced treatments for severe cases

Don’t Ignore Persistent Foot Pain

If your feet regularly ache after walking, standing, or exercising, don’t assume it’s simply because you have flat feet. Persistent discomfort is often a sign that your feet could benefit from a professional evaluation.
