Can an Old Ankle Sprain Cause Problems Years Later?

You twisted your ankle years ago, the swelling went down, and eventually you got back to normal. So why is that same ankle suddenly aching, feeling weak, or giving out? An old ankle sprain can sometimes cause problems long after the original injury, especially if the ligaments did not fully heal or the ankle was not completely rehabilitated.

At New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group, we treat ankle and sports injuries that can affect comfort, stability, and mobility well beyond the initial injury.

How Can an Old Ankle Sprain Affect You Later?

While many sprains heal without lasting problems, a more severe injury or incomplete rehabilitation can leave the ankle weaker and less stable.

Over time, you may notice symptoms such as:

  • Recurring ankle sprains
  • A feeling that the ankle is “giving way”
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Swelling after activity
  • Difficulty walking on uneven surfaces
  • Reduced balance or confidence during exercise

Repeated sprains can contribute to chronic ankle instability, which may make future injuries more likely. Learn more about how ankle instability affects foot and ankle health.

Can an Old Sprain Lead to Arthritis?

In some cases, previous ankle injuries can contribute to joint changes later in life. Post-traumatic arthritis can develop after an injury damages the cartilage or alters the way the ankle joint moves. Symptoms may include pain, stiffness, swelling, or reduced range of motion.

This does not mean everyone who has sprained an ankle will develop arthritis. However, recurring symptoms years after an injury are worth discussing with a podiatrist rather than assuming they are simply a normal part of aging.

What Can Be Done for Lingering Ankle Problems?

Treatment options may include strengthening and balance exercises, bracing, activity modifications, physical therapy, or other treatments designed to improve stability and function. Physical therapy can be especially helpful for rebuilding strength and mobility after certain foot and ankle injuries.

If an ankle you injured years ago has started bothering you again, it may be connected to more than everyday wear and tear. Contact New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group to schedule an evaluation.
