Back-to-School Foot Myths

Did you know August is National Back to School Month? Now is the time to start getting the kids back into their routine and preparing for the first day of classes. It’s hard to accept the summer season is winding down so soon. As podiatrists, we’re here to make sure your school-aged children can walk the halls and stand at the bus stop in comfort.
Each season, the doctors at New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group hear some myths about foot hygiene for kids. Unfortunately, falling for these lies can lead to negative consequences for future foot health. We often remind parents that the way their child cares for their feet now can have future impacts.
Here are three myths about back-to-school foot health:
Guess the shoe size
Please don’t guess your child’s shoe size. We know it may be tempting to assume that not much growth has occurred but guessing can waste time and money. There’s one simple solution to getting the size right the first time: use a Brannock Device. Most shoe stores have this device, and they will be happy to assist.
Truth: Children’s feet grow much faster than adult feet. Pay close attention.
Podiatry isn’t for kids
We love helping children prevent and treat common foot conditions. Problems like ingrown toenails, flat feet, or even ankle sprains are reasons to visit our team. Most importantly, we want parents to know we treat more than injuries. We want to set your child up for success to have strong, healthy feet.
Truth: Starting with healthy foot hygiene at an early age sets children up for success.
Growing pains are normal
Whether you are 6 or 78, foot pain is not normal. Knowing this truth should empower parents to quickly address their child’s complaints of foot pain. If you notice behavior changes in your child, such as more sitting and less playing, it’s time to ask some questions. We can help you start the conversation and learn more.
Truth: Undiagnosed foot conditions cause problems later in life.
Back-to-school season is here, and we want your child to walk into the classroom with facts. If they have foot pain or questions about their foot health, we’re here to help.
