How Seniors Can Prevent Falling this Fall Season

A fall can happen in an instant, and for seniors, it happens all the time. According to the CDC, about 1 in 4 seniors will fall every year, or roughly 14 million people. However, we at New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group understand that this harsh reality of old age is preventable. Let’s go over the best tips for keeping seniors on their feet.

Check Your Footwear

Your feet play a huge role in your balance. But conditions like bunions, hammertoes, or arthritis can cause pain that makes you alter your gait, which in turn throws off your stability.

That’s why a podiatrist can be a great partner in your fall prevention plan. By helping you avoid flimsy slippers or shoes, helping you fit into custom orthotics, and choosing shoes with a wide, supportive base, we can prevent tripping as a team.

Make Your Home Safer

Your home should be your safest place, but it can be full of hidden dangers. We recommend clearing junk from walkways, stairs, and entryways, secure all loose rugs with non-slip backing or double-sided tape, and making sure your home is well-lit, especially in hallways and on staircases (and of course, using nightlights for those late-night trips to the bathroom).

Installing grab bars in the shower and next to the toilet can also provide support in potentially wet areas.

Improve Your Balance

We’re not saying you have to lift heavy weights to get these benefits. Gentle, low-impact exercises are incredibly effective. For instance, Tai Chi and yoga are fantastic for improving balance and flexibility because they focus on, well, focus and going slow.

Also, simple walks on even surfaces can strengthen your leg and foot muscles. Think of life as your exercise, always taking the opportunities to incorporate movement.

Manage Your Health

Your overall health is directly linked to your fall risk. We recommend getting your vision checked regularly and reviewing all your medications with your doctor. Some medications can cause side effects like dizziness or drowsiness, so if you’ve been feeling off kilter lately, seek help.

But the number one rule for staying healthy: staying hydrated and eating a balanced diet. This will give you the strength and energy you need to stand, walk, and move comfortably on your feet.
