gout

Gout is a form of arthritis that mostly affects the big toe joint. It can affect other joints, too. Do you know what causes the condition? The doctors at the New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group are here to talk about it as we prepare for the holiday season.

The buildup of urate crystals is the main cause of gout. These sharp, needle-like crystals can cause inflammation of the surrounding joints. While we naturally produce uric acid, certain foods and drinks can make the levels too high.

This holiday season, here are ways to prevent gout. If you experience this condition, we’re here to help with pain management.

Can gout affect anyone?

Yes, the condition affects anyone – and the pain can begin at any time. For patients who have their big toe joint impacted, the joint can feel swollen, tender, or even hot to the touch. Another symptom is a limited range of motion. Can you wiggle your big toe?

Can I manage gout on my own?

If left without management, one complication can be joint damage. The back and forth of swelling and inflammation is no fun. Also, there may be signs of an infection, including swelling and redness.

Can I avoid an attack?

Being overweight, taking certain medications, and having medical conditions such as diabetes can increase your risk. For your diet, avoid these foods and beverages:

  • Red meat and shellfish
  • Drinks sweetened with fructose
  • Alcohol, especially beer
