Why Does One of My Feet Hurt More Than the Other?
Most people assume that if a foot problem develops, both feet should hurt equally. So, when pain appears in just one foot, it can be confusing.
At New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group, our podiatrists frequently evaluate patients who are experiencing pain in only one foot. While it may seem unusual, one-sided foot pain is quite common and can occur for a variety of reasons.
Your Feet Are Not Identical
Feet are rarely the same. One foot may have a slightly higher arch, different biomechanics, or a history of previous injuries that affects how it functions.
Over time, these small differences can place more stress on one foot than the other.
Common Causes of One-Sided Foot Pain
Previous Injuries
An old ankle sprain, fracture, or sports injury can alter the way you walk, even years later. This can create uneven pressure and increase strain on one foot.
Plantar Fasciitis
While plantar fasciitis can affect both feet, it often starts in just one. Patients typically notice heel pain that is worse first thing in the morning or after periods of rest.
Arthritis
Joint wear and tear do not always occur evenly, and arthritis may develop more severely in one foot.
Stress Fractures
Small cracks in the bone caused by repetitive activity often affect only one foot. The pain may begin gradually and worsen with walking, running, or exercise.
Nerve Irritation
Conditions such as neuromas or nerve compression can cause burning, tingling, numbness, or localized pain in a single foot.
Don’t Ignore the Difference
Many people try to compensate for pain by shifting their weight to the opposite side. Unfortunately, this can create new problems in the feet, ankles, knees, hips, and lower back.
Pay attention to:
- Persistent pain in one foot
- Swelling or tenderness
- Changes in your walking pattern
- Difficulty standing or exercising
- Pain that continues to worsen over time
