winter

Are you a winter sports fan, or is your family planning the next big ski trip? There are a few surprises that can come along with the joy of winter. Think about the beautiful, fresh snow. There are also freezing temperatures. Before you hit the slopes or step outside for a day of play, we’re sharing a few of our winter worries.

Are you ready to take notes?

The doctors at the New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group treat common injuries like ankle sprains and fractures. Patients can prevent many of these injuries by starting with the right shoes. Remember, your shoe choice should match the sport. The Brannock Device helps ensure that you have the correct size. That’s right – they have devices to measure for ski boots, too. Make sure you have the correct measurements for the whole family.

Here are five other worries:

Cold conditions

Are you bundled up? If you’re traveling, make sure you’ve planned for the weather. Pack layers, including socks. Frostbite is a concern for winter sports enthusiasts. It can happen quicker than you think.

Dry skin

Our skin needs moisture. Without it, we can have dry, cracked skin, which can be painful and even infected. For patients with diabetes, dry skin is a big concern. Moisture matters so much in these dry, frigid conditions. Choose a high-quality moisturizer to use after a day in the cold.

Sweaty socks

Sweaty socks in the winter? Yes! All those layers can create moisture underneath. While protecting your feet with comfortable socks, make sure you change them daily. Always wear clean, dry socks. Foot fungus is a problem in the winter, too.

Missing the marks

We’re all covered up in the winter, and we may miss some things. Don’t skip out on your daily foot checks. Waiting until summer is dangerous. You could have cuts or other changes happening to your feet.

Heating hazards

Are you trying to stay warm? Make sure you follow the directions. Never put your feet or ankles near direct heat. If you suffer from neuropathy, beware of hot baths, heaters, heated blankets, and other accessories.
