Burning Feet at Night: Common Causes and Treatments

A burning sensation in the feet at night can make it difficult to relax, sleep comfortably, or even get through daily activities. Some people describe the feeling as tingling, heat, sharp pain, or numbness that worsens in the evening hours. While occasional discomfort may not seem serious, persistent burning feet can sometimes signal an underlying medical condition that should not be ignored.

At the New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group, patients receive expert care for foot pain, nerve issues, and other conditions affecting foot and ankle health.

What Causes Burning Feet?

There are several reasons why burning feet may develop, ranging from mild irritation to more serious nerve-related conditions.

Peripheral Neuropathy

One of the most common causes of burning feet is peripheral neuropathy, which occurs when nerves become damaged. Diabetes is a leading cause of neuropathy, but it may also result from vitamin deficiencies, alcohol use, infections, or certain medications. Symptoms often include burning, tingling, numbness, or stabbing pain that worsens at night.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome develops when a nerve running along the inside of the ankle becomes compressed. This can lead to burning pain, tingling, or numbness that radiates into the foot.

Athlete’s Foot

Fungal infections such as athlete’s foot may also create burning or itching sensations, especially between the toes or along the soles of the feet. Redness, peeling skin, and irritation are common symptoms.

Poor Circulation

Reduced blood flow to the feet can sometimes create unusual sensations, including burning or cramping. Circulatory problems are more common in individuals with diabetes, a smoking history, or cardiovascular conditions.

In some cases, advanced imaging or nerve testing may be needed to determine the source of symptoms.
