Why Does My Foot Hurt More at Night?

Foot pain that becomes more noticeable at night can have several causes, including nerve problems, arthritis, overuse, or an underlying foot condition. Where the pain occurs and whether you also have numbness, tingling, swelling, or stiffness can help point to the cause.

Below, the podiatrists at New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group explain potential reasons behind nighttime foot pain.

Can Neuropathy Cause Foot Pain at Night?

Yes. Peripheral neuropathy can cause burning, tingling, numbness, or sharp pain in the feet, and neuropathic pain may be worse at night. Diabetes is one common cause, although nerve damage can have many causes.

If you have diabetes, regular diabetic foot care is especially important because reduced sensation can make it harder to notice cuts, sores, or other injuries. Changes in sensation should be evaluated rather than ignored.

Can Arthritis Make Your Feet Ache at Night?

Arthritis can affect joints throughout the foot and ankle, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced movement. For some people, joint pain can make it difficult to get comfortable or stay asleep. Different forms of arthritis can affect the feet, and several other foot conditions can cause symptoms that resemble arthritis.

Could Daytime Activity Be Causing Nighttime Foot Pain?

Sometimes foot pain becomes more noticeable after a long day of standing, walking, exercising, or wearing unsupportive shoes. Overuse can irritate muscles, tendons, ligaments, or joints, and an injury may become more apparent once you are resting.

Heel pain and plantar fasciitis can also follow their own patterns. Plantar fasciitis typically causes pain near the bottom of the heel that is especially noticeable with the first steps after rest, rather than only at night. Other causes of heel pain include tendon problems, stress injuries, and nerve irritation.

When Should I See a Podiatrist?

Foot pain that repeatedly wakes you up, continues to worsen, or occurs with numbness, burning, swelling, redness, weakness, or difficulty walking deserves attention. A podiatrist can examine your feet and determine whether the problem involves nerves, joints, soft tissues, or another source.
