Football Facts about Foot Injuries

Football season is here, and we are here for you, too! Are you a football player or a football fan? Maybe you’re both. Today, as we celebrate the return of the football season, let’s talk about injuries. We know that is the last thing to discuss, especially if you play or your children are on the team.
The doctors at the New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group help patients do their best to stay on the field all season long. It takes practice and prevention methods. Common football problems include Achilles tendon injuries, ankle sprains, and turf toe. Even the most seasoned athlete can run into these issues.
Here are three injuries that can cause problems:
Achilles tendon injuries
An Achilles injury is a big deal for an athlete, whether it is inflammation or a tear. The Achilles tendon can become inflamed and cause tendonitis. If it tears, there is a rupture. When you see football players suddenly picking up the pace and accelerating across the field, there is a risk of an Achilles injury.
Ankle sprains
If you play the game, stretch your ankles and provide support. If you think about football, you can think about their incredible footwork on the field. They’re constantly moving and dodging one player after the next. The back-and-forth, however, can be a recipe for an ankle sprain. When the ankle moves unnaturally, the injury can occur.
Turf toe
Turf toe may sound like a silly name, but it is a serious injury. It is when you sprain the big toe joint. The name comes from how it often occurs in sports on turf or artificial grass. A player can develop a turf toe after pushing their toes while running. They can also sprain their big toe if someone falls on it during the game.
Football season may be one of your favorite times of the year. If you are a player or know someone taking the field, pass along these injuries. Visiting your doctor before the season and during the season can be a helpful way to stay ahead of or treat injuries.
