Spring Sports Injuries: 5 Ways to Spot a Stress Fracture in Your Foot
Spring sports are in full swing, and we at New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group are just as excited to get back to helping athletes stay safe. However, one of the most sneaky and frustrating injuries you might encounter during this season is a stress fracture. Let’s go over the 5 warning signs of stress fractures in the feet and how to spot them.
Five Warning Signs Your Foot Has a Stress Fracture
- Tenderness in One Specific Spot
If you can touch one very specific area on the top of your foot or along a bone and feel a sharp, localized pain, that is a classic sign. Unlike general muscle soreness that feels spread out and achy, a stress fracture usually hurts right where the bone is struggling to handle the load.
- Pain That Improves with Rest
In the early stages of a stress fracture, you might notice that your foot hurts while you are running or playing, but the pain disappears as soon as you sit down. This can trick you into thinking it is just a minor strain, but as the crack deepens, the pain will start to stick around much longer after you stop moving.
- Swelling on the Top of Your Foot or Ankle
Pay close attention to the shape of your foot compared to the other one. If you notice puffiness or swelling on the top of the foot that doesn’t seem to have a clear cause, like a stumble or a trip, your bone might be reacting to the internal stress. The skin might even look a bit shiny or tight in that area.
- Increased Pain While Running
If walking feels okay but jumping, running, hopping, or sprinting creates a sharp, stabbing sensation, you are likely dealing with a bone-related issue. Your foot is failing to absorb the shock of your activity, and the bone is bearing the brunt of every landing.
- Visible Bruising Without a Known Cause
Seeing a bit of discoloration or bruising on your foot when you do not remember hitting it against anything? This indicates that the bone is under enough pressure to cause minor internal bleeding or inflammation in the surrounding tissue.
