Lesser Known Causes of Heel Pain: What You Should Know

NJPPSG BGSMP 11.13

Heel pain is a common issue that affects people of all ages, and while conditions like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis are well-known culprits, several lesser-known causes of heel pain can be just as debilitating. Below, New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group outlines these issues so patients can remain informed and find much-needed relief:

1. Bursitis

  • Bursitis occurs when the bursa — a small fluid-filled sac that cushions bones and joints — becomes inflamed.
  • Causes include excessive friction from footwear, repetitive stress, or a sudden increase in physical activity.

2. Heel Spurs

  • A heel spur is a bony growth that usually forms where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel.
  • Some people experience significant discomfort, especially when standing or walking for long periods.
  • The condition is often linked to improper footwear, overuse, or inflammation.

3. Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (TTS) occurs when the tibial nerve, which runs down the inside of the ankle and into the foot, becomes compressed, causing tingling, numbness, and burning sensations.
  • It may be caused by structural abnormalities, like flat feet, or by injuries that cause swelling and pressure on the nerve.

4. Stress Fractures

  • Stress fractures in the heel, though rare, can cause significant pain, particularly among athletes or individuals who engage in high-impact activities.
  • These small cracks in the heel bone develop from repetitive stress or overuse and often cause sharp pain when standing or walking.

5. Sever’s Disease

  • Sever’s Disease commonly occurs in children and adolescents, occurring when the growth plate in the heel becomes inflamed.
  • This condition often resolves once the child’s bones stop growing.

6. Nerve Entrapment

  • Nerve entrapment occurs when a nerve becomes compressed or pinched.
  • The pain may be sharp or burning, and it can be exacerbated by activities like walking or standing for long periods.

Heel pain can have a variety of causes, some more common and others less well-known. By understanding these lesser-known causes, you can take proactive steps toward relieving heel pain and maintaining foot health.
