What does Men’s Health Month mean to you? To us, June is a time to remind the men and boys in our lives to prioritize their health. We’re talking about their foot health, too. Prevention is one way to make our health a priority. In real-time, reacting to symptoms is also another way. Can you think of any others?
Today, the doctors at the New Jersey Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons Group want to talk about three common foot problems and how to spot the signs.
Are you ready to make a change this Men’s Health Month? Let’s get started.
Heel pain
Do you have heel pain? Perhaps you notice it after a long day on your feet. Does the pain pop up after a good night’s rest? Plantar fasciitis is a common form of heel pain that impacts many people. The pain can be sharp, and it may come back after a period of rest.
- Heel pain affects the way you move, from walking to running
- A patient may experience sudden, sharp discomfort
- At times, remedies are only short-term fixes
Ingrown toenails
Is your toenail growing into the side of your skin? Ingrown toenails are a common foot problem, and the condition can become painful if left untreated. If your shoes are too tight or you are trimming your nails the wrong way, you are at risk of harming your toenails.
- Shop for shoes with roomy toe boxes
- Trim straight across with clean clippers
- If you see signs of infection, contact your podiatrist
Athlete’s foot
Scratchy, stinky, or scaly feet? Athlete’s foot may be knocking at your door. Most people pick up this condition by walking barefoot in public spaces like locker rooms or near the pool. The infection can spread from person to person, including your family members.
- Watch your feet while at the gym, in the locker room, etc.
- Don’t share towels, shoes, and other hygiene items
- If you notice symptoms, seek medical help to contain the spread
We are here for you! How can you make this Men’s Health Month one that begins with change and remains consistent? We believe you can start today.
